Tortured by Time

A sonnet

(Photo by Jakub Dziubak on Unsplash)

If my love could tame the tick and the tock

I’d suspend the seconds I shared with you.

Then maybe I wouldn’t resent the clock

maybe I’d escape the pain that ensued.

If my love could pause the pendulum’s pace

or manipulate how the minute moves,

I would destroy time’s oppressive constraints

and linger in limitless life with you.

But we are hostage to hollow hours

and time is a thief we are tethered to-

the clock’s cruel curse cannot be countered

an eternal force no soul can elude.

If only my love could turn back the time

I would stop the seconds and save your life.
